Confession: I’m a complete hiking poser. That’s right. I read a book by Bill Bryson, and then I read Cheryl Strayed’s Wild and I felt like I had walked in their shoes (...ha, ha). I felt like I hiked the AT and then the PCT myself-- all from various reading spots on the grass, in the car (as a passenger) and from the couch. And all without breaking a sweat.
I got so into the thought of hiking that I started this blog in 2012 to document my adventures. I still do, and I still find it enjoyable. I still have aspirations to hike the AT one day.
I’m still a complete poser.
I don’t have a “pack,” I’ve never thru-hiked, I have no idea what it’s like to hike all day and then pick a spot to call it a night. That being said, hiking is what I call my triple-threat recreational activity(!). It just needs that exclamation point...
The requirements of a triple-threat recreational activity(!) (copyright me) are as follows:
- You can call it a workout and check off the “exercise” box on your to-do list. You can feel mostly honest in doing so.
- You feel more relaxed after you’ve done said activity.
- You can do #s 1 and 2 while spending some quality time with friends and family-- whether it’s in person during a hike together, or on the phone (if you must have your electronics). I don’t advise, however, surfing the internet during your hiking time. See here on why not all breaks are bad, especially technological ones.
Hiking may or may not be for you, but I definitely encourage finding your triple-threat activity(!) that gives your mind a rest and helps you tap into your internal voice, which, I think, is somewhere below that restless mind. If you're lucky, you might even be able to get your writing voice to speak up, which is, of course, what it's all about.
