The Curious Cat Blog is all about writing, for writers, by a writer.

Living small

Carina Sitkus

A writer has to feel small. Otherwise, what would there be to write about? You can only feel wonder when life is bigger.

Regardless of who you are and your stature in life, if you feel like there’s nothing else to explore or cherish or marvel, that’s it for you. Your purpose is gone, my friend.

I’ve never felt completely “right” in the mind when there is clutter or piles of mess around me when I’m working. There’s just something about a clean space that helps me focus. For others, the creative process thrives on having lots of objects around them.  It’s all a matter of preference.

Regardless of how you keep your objects, there is something to be said for living small. Living with only what you need. Paring down your outer life so you can focus on your inner one.

Apartment therapy features famous writers’ small writing spots.

You can’t take it with you, they say. What you can do is paint your time and place with words that, if you’re lucky, will last longer and depict more honestly what and how you lived within your short time here. The rest is up for grabs.
